]]><![CDATA[Mountain Biking]]>Thu, 28 Jul 2011 11:02:46 -0800http://www.skijosh.com/1/post/2011/07/mountain-biking.htmlLast Saturday I headed up to Deer Valley resort with Ethan Taft.  While the terrain at Deer Valley provides relatively tame and unexciting skiing, the same terrain makes for some of the most fun and exhilarating mountain biking in the state.  The trails are not full of berms and table tops, but rather chunder, baby heads, and shark teeth.  Instead of riding a long with too much travel on a trail as wide as a hummer, Deer Valley trails are full of technical rumblefests, sketchy drops, twisty roots, and narrow singletrack.  This type of riding strikes at the very heart of downhill mountain biking. While many resorts are installing trails which claim to have 'flow", Deer Valley has stuck to the roots of mountain biking, and kept things technical.  Here are a few pictures from our day.  The first one is from Thieves Forest, the second is from NCS. Thieves Forest: A steep, loose downhill course with numerous drops and rock features. Pads and downhill bike recommended. Hiking not recommended.

NCS (National Championship Series Downhill Course): This trail is one of the most difficult downhill race courses in the country. Steep and very technical, this trail is only for the properly equipped expert or pro downhill racer. Downhill-specific bike and protective gear recommended. Hiking not recommended.
]]><![CDATA[Skiing in July]]>Mon, 04 Jul 2011 11:21:07 -0800http://www.skijosh.com/1/post/2011/07/skiing-in-july.htmlThe last month has consisted of surfing, climbing, hiking, mountain biking, wakeboarding, whitewater rafting and waterskiing.  A few random snow days have been strewn in the mix, but for the most part I haven't skied much since May. 

Because of the massive quantities of snow that Snowbird Resort in Utah has received this year, it has decided to remain open through the 4th of July (and perhaps beyond).  While it is now difficult to ski to the base of the tram without taking your skis off to walk, the upper mountain still has exorbitant amounts of snow in all the right places, which is guaranteed to make your 4th of July weekend memorable. The skiing might not be as great as it was in March.  The snow might be a little bit slow and slushy, but all in all, whenever you can ski in July, its hard to complain!

Yesterday Sean Smith and I met up with Brady Newton and Pieter Leeflang up at Snowbird, Utah. While most skiers spent the day lapping the 2 open lifts (Little Cloud and Mineral Basin Express), we decided to check out the snow a little higher on the mountain, on American Fork's East Twin.

]]><![CDATA[Pictures from Climbing]]>Fri, 13 May 2011 13:43:16 -0800http://www.skijosh.com/1/post/2011/05/pictures-from-climbing.htmlIt has been years since I have put on a harness and attempted to push and pull myself up a rock wall.  Yesterday I got the chance to get back into it.  Hopefully it won't be years and year until I get to do it again.  It is a lot of fun.  Here are some pics of a 5.10a and a 5.11 that we got! I obviously only top roped them, but hopefully it is a sign of good things to come.

]]><![CDATA[Brady Newton February]]>Mon, 21 Mar 2011 21:50:27 -0800http://www.skijosh.com/1/post/2011/03/brady-newton-february.htmlMan, I didn't get to ski enough in February.  Brady did though.  Here is a new edit from him.  You might recall in my last blog post that we have been doing some night touring.  Here is some footage to prove it.  There is nothing more exhilarating than getting a face shot in the dark, not knowing if you might run into a tree, or a bush, or a coyote, or a person with their headlamp turned off.  After the night footage Brady takes you on another Tour de Snowbird.  Good stuff Brady, Good Stuff. 

In the coming weeks you can expect another video from myself as well as some reviews of the Moment PB&J, Rossignol Super S7, Surface New Life, and Faction Thirteens!
